چکیده

A total of 41 1 subjects participated in two decision-making experiments in order to examine the effectiveness of new product development project continuation decisions. Using escalation of commitment theory, in Study 1 , individual versus face-to-face team decision-making effectiveness was compared. Study 2, an extension of Study 1, compared the new product development decision-making effectiveness of individuals, face-to-face teams, and virtual teams. A virtual team is a geographically and temporally dispersed and electronically communicating work group. In Study 2, the virtual teams communicated asynchronously via groupware technology. Our findings suggest that teams make more effective decisions than individuals, and virtual teams make the most effective decisions. Subject Areas: Computer-mediated Communication Systems, Multivariate Statistics, Product Development, Product Planning, Project Management, and Strategic Decision Making.

Beyond brainstorming: The effectiveness of computer-mediated communication for convergence and negotiation tasks

Article history: Received 1 August 2009 Accepted 15 September 2009 Although a considerable body of research in information systems has established that computer-mediated communication (CMC) is beneficial for brainstorming (idea generation) tasks, less is known about its effectiveness for more complex decision-making tasks. This paper reports the results of two experiments comparing the performa...

When does the medium matter? Knowledge-building experiences and opportunities in decision-making teams

The purpose of this investigation was to examine whether temporal scope—the extent to which teams have a past or expect to have a future together—affects face-to-face and computer-mediated teams ability to communicate effectively and make high quality decisions. Results indicated that media differences existed for teams lacking a history, with face-to-face teams exhibiting higher openness/trust...

Social Aspects of Virtual Teams

There has been a transformation from individual work to team work in the last few decades (Ilgen, 1999), and many organizations use teams for many activities done by individuals in the past (Boyett & Conn, 1992 ; Katzenbach & Smith, 1993). In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in computermediated groups because of the increases in globalization of business operations leading to geo...

Analysis of the Effectiveness of Global Virtual Teams in Software Engineering Projects

Global software development projects use virtual teams, which are primarily linked through computer and telecommunications technologies across national boundaries. Global Virtual Teams rarely meet in a faceto-face context and thus face challenging problems not associated with traditional co-located teams. To understand the complex issues in a virtual project environment during the requirements ...
